Nairobi – Arusha – Ngorongoro
From Nairobi, your Shades of Africa representative will transfer you to the border at Namanga. Arrive for lunch in Arusha and then onward to Ngorongoro Crater. Environmentalist Bernhard Grzimek wrote: “It is impossible to give a fair description of the size and beauty of the Crater, for there is nothing with which one can compare it. It is one of the Wonders of the World.”

Ngorongoro Crater
Your guide will navigate his special 4x4 vehicle into the Crater, meandering among some 30,000 animals on the secluded floor, a compact universe perfectly encased by the 2,000-foot high crater wall. You’ll pass through grasslands, swamps, lakes, rivers, woodlands and arid areas with drifting dunes. Watch for wildebeest, zebra, elephant, buffalo, hyena, lion, rock hyrax, blue monkey and olive baboon. Enjoy a picnic lunch under the trees but beware of the notorious, swooping kites.

Ngorongoro – Serengeti
After breakfast, depart the Crater en-route to the fabled Serengeti. At mid-day, stop at Olduvai Gorge for a picnic lunch. This is the site of arguably the most famous archeological dig in Africa. The Leakey family’s discoveries of early hominids fueled academic debate about the origin of humanity in Africa. The Endless Plain of the Serengeti reveals the world’s greatest wildlife refuge. The park’s 5,700 square miles (roughly the size of Connecticut) boasts an astounding three million large mammals. The wildebeest and zebra lead an annual exodus that is unparalleled in nature. The Great Migration is triggered by the seasonal rains.

Serengeti
During the heat of the day, much of the wildlife rests under cover. Your early morning and late afternoon game drives are coordinated with their activity. By now, you’ll be an expert game tracker. So, do you think most lions look the same? How about the zebras in a herd? Watch closely and you’ll observe that no two zebras have the same strip pattern! Lions are distinguishable by their facial scars and whisker patterns. Cheetahs sport individualized ring patterns on their tails, while antelopes may have unusually curved or curled horns.
