DAY 3
Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi, the bustling capital of Kenya. Transfer to the Norfolk Hotel. Rest of the morning is free in the colonial comfort of your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, former home of the author of Out of Africa. Then visit Giraffe Manor for a chance to feed the 18-foot tall giraffes. Talk about a tall order!
Nairobi - Amboseli
Morning drive to Amboseli National Park at the foot of snow–capped Mount Kilimanjaro. Your permanent tented camp provides a unique safari experience combining the amenities of a top-notch lodge with the earthy feel of a camp. Your private tent opens to the bedroom with one king-size or two generous twin beds. A dressing area is adjacent to the modern bathroom featuring a hot shower and flush toilet. Each tent is above-ground on a wooden deck with private verandah, sheltered from the sun by a makuti (thatched) roof. Apart from game viewing, you may visit the Masai people in their traditional homes – the manyatta.
Amboseli
Morning and evening game viewing in the shadow of mighty Kili. Today, you’ll be on the lookout for elephant, giraffe, gazelles and lion prides. In the heat of the noon-day sun, many hot, thirsty animals visit a nearby waterhole. You can observe them closely – and safely -- from the camp’s own inviting swimming pool.
Amboseli – Sweetwaters
After breakfast at Tortilis, depart by road to Nairobi for lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. Then on to Mount Kenya’s private 22,000-acre Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary, home of the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Take a boat ride down the river to see these protected primates swinging in the trees. Other optional activities include a camel-back safari, horseback riding, walking safari and night-time game viewing.
Sweetwaters - Masai Mara
Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Masai Mara National Reserve, flying across the Great Rift Valley. Although moderate in size, Masai Mara supports the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa. On the open, undulating plains, you are practically assured of sighting the Big Five -- lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
Masai Mara
Spend the day in the Mara. Kichwa Tembo (Head of the Elephant in Swahili) is an oasis of Hemingway-style tents, secluded in the dense ebony and fig-tree forest. This is where a famous Redford-Streep scene from Out of Africa was filmed. The Mara ecosystem is the venue for the world’s most dramatic wildlife migration. Over 2.2 million animals, led by wildebeest and zebra, leave the Serengeti for the fertile grasslands in Kenya.
Masai Mara – Nairobi
Transfer to the airstrip, viewing animals along the way. Fly to Nairobi where a day room awaits at the Norfolk Hotel. Spend the afternoon either shopping or relaxing in the hotel. Evening transfer to the airport for departure to Europe.
DAY 10
Arrive in Europe early in the morning. Connect to your USA– bound flight, arriving later in the day.
