DAY 1 & 2
USA/Canada-Cairo
Board your direct flight to cosmopolitan Cairo. On arrival, your Shades of Africa representative will meet you and escort you to the hotel.
Cairo
Travel to the best-known ancient wonders of the world, the legendary Pyramids of Egypt. The Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the Solar Boat Museum are yours for the viewing. Lunch is at Mena House, within view of the Great Pyramid. Next, continue to Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital (2,700-2270 B.C). The enormous statue of Ramses II will amaze you. Then it’s on to the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the 13 other pyramids of Sakkara. Djoser’s Pyramid is the first and oldest stone structure in Egypt.
King Tutankhamun and the treasure of the Great Pharaohs await at Egypt’s National Museum of Antiquities. Old Cairo and its Roman Fortress of Babylon will charm you, as will the Suspended Coptic Church, one of the oldest in the region. Go back in time to the 1100s and the birth of Islam at the citadel of Salah El Din, the Alabaster Mosque and the Khan El Khalili Bazaar.
Cairo-Luxor
In the morning, fly from Luxor to Cairo; board your Sonesta cruise liner for a full-window view of the Nile. After lunch, see the Temple of Luxor, the 40-centuries-old Temple of Amun-Ra and an obelisk of pink Aswan granite. Discover the world's largest and oldest religious structure, the Temple of Karnak. Covering 60 acres, it was constructed by successive Egyptian pharaohs.
Nile Cruise
On the opposite bank of the Nile, explore ancient Thebes, the Colossi of Memnon—built to honor Amenophis III—and the Temple of Ramses III. In the Valley of the Kings, you will be aware of the timeless tombs of these pharaohs. The well-preserved tomb paintings and carvings in the resting place of Ramses VI will enchant you. Then look upon the tomb of Queen Hatshepsut in the Valley of the Queens and Nobles. After lunch your ship is underway to Edfu.
Nile Cruise
Your ship makes its way to see the temple and mural art of Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus in Edfu is next. Cap off the night with a party on board your ship.
Nile Cruise
If modern marvels and monuments are your cup of tea, you’ll enjoy the trip to the Aswan Dam. Continue to the Temple of Philae, then examine the Unfinished Obelisk to peek in on the secrets of ancient construction techniques. Cross the Nile in a felucca to view the Botanical Island and the Mausoleum of Agha Khan. Tonight, enjoy dinner and a Nubian folklore presentation.
Aswan-Abu Simbel-Cairo
In Aswan, your cruise ends. Your guide takes you to Aswan airport, where you fly to Abu Simbel. Stand in awe of the four immense stone figures on the temple of Ramses II. Return to Cairo by air for a farewell dinner.
