Arrive in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. A Shades of Africa representative will transfer you to the famous Norfolk Hotel, an oasis of tranquil gardens and country rooms in the middle of the bustling city. This afternoon visit the home of Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa. Finally, we’ll escort you to Giraffe Manor. You’ll have the opportunity to feed the 18-foot tall giraffes. For all its imposing height, a giraffe’s neck has only seven vertebrae, the same as humans.

DAY 4
Nairobi – Amboseli
Transfer to Wilson Airport for a scheduled flight to Amboseli National Park. Arrive and immediately start on a game viewing safari amid herds of impala, gazelle and zebra. Amboseli is situated at the foot of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Springs from the melting snow provide Amboseli’s animals with their vital water supply.

DAY 5
Amboseli
This morning’s early morning game drive affords a glimpse of Kili before clouds cloak its peak. Probably the most famous inhabitants of Amboseli are its many elephants. Elephant behavior and lineage have been the lifework of Cynthia Moss. Her 35-year study identified and recorded an impressive 1,400 Amboseli elephants, belonging to 50 families in a 400 square mile range. Also today, you may join an optional visit to a nearby Masai village.

DAY 6
Amboseli - Samburu
Transfer to airstrip. Your morning flight will take you to Samburu Game Reserve in northern Kenya. Notice the difference in wild animals from Amboseli. Samburu features unique species, such as the Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and other animals that have adapted to the reserve’s semi-arid conditions.

DAY 7
Samburu
Your base camp in Samburu is the luxury Intrepids Club Tented Camp along the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Each tent features just-like-home four-poster beds, mahogany closets and desks, and an en-suite bathroom with steaming hot showers. The modern bathrooms offer twin washbasins, flush toilets and sockets for recharging your shaver. Your private tent has a palm-thatched roof and is raised on stilts to catch the river’s cool breeze. In addition to game drives, you may visit a Samburu village or join an optional nature walk.

DAY 8
Samburu – Masai Mara

The Mara’s open, undulating plains practically assure you of sighting the Big Five -- lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

DAY 9 & 10
Masai Mara
Two spectacular days of game drives and activities. Your tented camp gently hugs a meandering oxbow of the Mara River. From your private verandah, spot your riverine neighbors, including hippos and crocs, as well as curious monkey’s hanging around the compound. Masai Mara is home to the world’s most spectacular animal migration. Over a million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and antelopes pursue the Reserve’s verdant grasses. Hungry lions, cheetahs and hyenas pursue the grazers.
