"Our hotels, services and meals throughout the trip were excellent. We had top-notch drivers, and I wanted to have at least one female guide to share information from a feminine perspective; that was accomplished on this wonderful trip. I would have no hesitation in using Shades of Africa in the future or recommending Shades of Africa to others."
The most famous attractions are on your itinerary:
Cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain
Cape Point penguins, seals and glass-bottom
boat cruise
Wine tasting in South Africa
Private Game Reserve
Luxury Bush Camps and Lodges
Stunning and Powerful Victoria Falls
Exotic Okavango Delta in Botswana
DAY 1
Europe - Johannesburg
International flight from the USA to Europe and then board your flight to South Africa for the start of your tour.
DAY 2
Cape Town
Upon arrival in Cape Town, a Shades of Africa representative will meet and escort you to your hotel. Nestled at the foot of imposing Table Mountain, the hotel has presided over the city for more than 100 years, maintaining its reputation for elegance, luxury, and service. Nine acres of landscaped trees, shrubs, and rose gardens will take your breath away. Spend the rest of the day as you wish, before a Welcome to South Africa dinner.
Cape Town
Begin the morning with travel by cable car to the heights of Table Mountain for a regal view of Cape Town and the sea. Your driver/guide will then drive you to the Cape wine lands. While in Old Cape Dutch wine country, you are invited to taste the exquisite South African wines.
Take in the sights of the lovely city of Paarl. The buildings lining Main Road present an eclectic mosaic of architecture, ranging from Cape Dutch and Victorian, to Edwardian and Art Deco. We’ll stop at Franschhoek for lunch at the Ballon Rouge.
There’s wine tasting in store at Nelson’s Creek Wine Estate, and another at the Boschendal Estate. Tour Stellenbosch, and then end the day at your hotel.
Cape Town
We begin an exciting day with a short drive to Hout Bay, a charming little fishing village. We’ll take a relaxing 30-minute glass-bottom boat cruise around Seal Island, visit the Nature Reserve at Cape Point, and pause for photos at the Cape of Good Hope where the two oceans converge. Lunch is at the Black Marlin Restaurant, a former whaling station. Continue to Simon’s Town to see the robust African penguin colony at Boulders, and finally tour the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Cape Town
There are many optional sea-related trips to choose from, including diving with sharks (in a cage of course), seasonal whale watching at Hermanus (June to November), dune boarding, deep-sea fishing or scuba diving at Two Oceans Aquarium. For those non-aquatic visitors, we offer a sightseeing flight over the beautiful Cape Peninsula or an optional tour of Robben Island. Robben Island was the infamous prison for Apartheid-era prisoners. Nelson Mandela, of course, was its most famous resident.
Cape Town- Kruger Mpumulanga- Kirkman’s Camp Private Game Lodge
Fly to Johannesburg, then connect to Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport. A Shades of Africa representative from Kirkman’s Camp Game Reserve will meet and escort you to the lodge. Check into your private safari cottage. Each colonial style cottage has modern bathrooms with hot showers and air conditioning. Kirkman’s is the preferred lodge for such notables as Lord Richard Attenborough and Vidal Sassoon. Feel the wind blowing through your hair in our open safari vehicles during this afternoon’s game drive. Expert trackers escort you to search for South Africa’s premier wildlife, such as lions, elephants and rhinos. After your game drive you will have time to freshen up before dinner.
KIRKMAN’S CAMP GAME RESERVE (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)
DAY 7
Kirkman’s Camp Game Reserve
After a hot cup of morning coffee, you depart on your early game drive. Watch the sun rise with fellow early risers, such as warthogs, duikers, greater kudu, the shy bush baby, leopards, baboons, giraffes, buffalos and camouflaged chameleons. Enjoy a tasty brunch, and then the rest of the mid-day is at leisure. Perhaps you’ll encounter a pride of lions on this evening’s game drive.
K IRKMAN’S CAMP GAME RESERVE (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)
DAY 8
Kirkman’s Camp-Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Depart from Kirkman’s Camp to Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport (KMIA) for your flight to Johannesburg Airport, with a connecting flight to Victoria Falls.
Victoria Falls
Like explorer David Livingstone, we presume you will marvel at Victoria Falls, which he named for the British monarch. The local Makololo tribe called the Falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders.” Vic Falls is the site of a huge cataract where the mighty Zambezi River plunges 5,500 feet down to the gorge below. The rising, cascading mist creates an almost permanent rainbow. Victoria Falls is twice as wide and twice as deep as Niagara Falls. Enjoy a relaxing, eye-opening day. Optional activities are available, including bungee jumping (for the adventurous), elephant-back rides, river rafting and river boarding, or perhaps something simpler, like a relaxing sundowner cruise down the Zambezi.
Victoria Falls – Maun, Botswana-Nxabega Okavango Camp
After breakfast, you will be escorted to the Victoria Falls airport for a flight to Maun Airport, then a quick flight to the Nxabega Okavango Safari Camp. Nxabega means “Place of the Giraffe” in the click language of the River Bushmen. Look for elegant sable antelope, as well as buffalo, lion and splendid birdlife. Spend time exploring the waters and wildlife of Botswana.
Khwai River Lodge
The Shades of Africa Tour is escorted to the bush airstrip for a flight to your second Okavango Delta lodge. Two fully-inclusive overnights at this luxurious, former big-game hunting lodge, frequented by international celebrities and royalty (visit the on-site museum). Waterbuck, crocs, and hippo abound. Vast herds of antelope and zebra graze contentedly on the coarse delta grass. Of course, where the antelope feed, the predators are not far off. You (and the antelope) will keep a sharp lookout for lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog packs. Raptors are plentiful along the riverbank, including African fish eagles, tawny eagles, and Bateleurs, as well as saddle-bill storks, kingfishers, red bishops and swallow-tailed bee-eaters.
Camps- Maun - Europe
Transfer by air to Maun Airport and fly to Johannesburg for your connecting flights. (Breakfast)
DAY 14
Arrive London. Transatlantic flight to the USA.
