"Our hotels, services and meals throughout the trip were excellent. We had top-notch drivers, and I wanted to have at least one female guide to share information from a feminine perspective; that was accomplished on this wonderful trip. I would have no hesitation in using Shades of Africa in the future or recommending Shades of Africa to others."

Cape Town
Shades of Africa personnel meet you in Cape Town, and escort you to your hotel. Your tour guide will brief you on the itinerary. Then sit back and relax before dinner at the hotel. The Mount Nelson Hotel is situated at the foot of the extraordinary Table Mountain. The hotel has presided over the city for more that 100 years, maintaining its reputation for elegance, luxury and service. Its spectacular grand lady’s gardens—nine acres of established, landscaped trees, shrubs, and rose gardens, will delight you. Two world-class restaurants offer fine dining and an ideal spot to view the gardens.

DAY 3
Cape Town
If the weather allows, begin your morning traveling by cable car to the top of Table Mountain. Hike back down with your guide for lunch at the Mount Nelson. The morning’s excursion is followed by leisure at the hotel or in the city with plenty of time to prepare for your romantic sunset cruise along Cape Town’s scenic Atlantic seaboard. A great end to an enchanting day.

DAY 4
Cape Town- Cape Point - Stellenbosch
We begin an exciting day with a short drive to Hout Bay, a charming little fishing village. We’ll take a relaxing 30-minute glass-bottom boat cruise around Seal Island, visit the Nature Reserve at Cape Point, and pause for photos at the Cape of Good Hope where the two oceans converge. Lunch is at the Black Marlin Restaurant, a former whaling station. Continue to Simon’s Town to see the robust African penguin colony at Boulders, and finally check into the Lanzerac Hotel, situated in the heart of the Winelands on a 300-year-old country estate. All rooms and suites open onto private patios overlooking vineyards, gardens and the majestic Helderberg Mountains.

DAY 5
Stellenbosch
Our tour is one of the few that visits all the areas that the Cape Winelands offer. Start off with a visit to the Afrikaans-language monument situated high on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. After a city tour of Paarl, join the team of Nelson’s Creek Wine Estate for a cellar tour and wine tasting. Then make your way to Franschhoek for a lunch stop at the Ballon Rouge Restaurant. Visit the Boschendal Wine Estate, before a tour of Stellenbosch to end the day. Your Shades of Africa representative will escort you back to the hotel for a relaxing evening and dinner.

DAY 6 & 7
Stellenbosch - Cape Town - Pretoria

DAY 8
Pretoria – Kirkman’s Camp Game Reserve
Upon arrival at Pretoria Station, you will be transferred to Johannesburg Airport for a chartered flight to Kirkman’s Camp. A Shades of Africa representative from Kirkman’s will meet and escort you to the lodge. Kirkman’s is the preferred lodge for such notables as Lord Richard Attenborough and Vidal Sassoon (presumably searching for the rare African mousse). After settling into your private safari cottage, join your guide for the afternoon game drive. Expert trackers escort you in special open vehicles to search for South Africa’s premier wildlife, such as lions, elephants and rhinos. After your game drive you will have time to freshen up before dinner.

DAY 9 & 10
Kirkman’s Camp Game Reserve
After a hot cup of morning coffee, depart on your early game drive. Watch the sun rise with fellow early risers, such as warthogs, duikers, greater kudu, the shy bush baby, leopards, baboons, giraffes, buffalos and camouflaged chameleons. Enjoy a tasty brunch, and then the rest of the mid-day is at leisure. Perhaps you’ll encounter a pride of lions on this afternoon’s game drive.

DAY 11
Kirkman’s Camp Game Reserve - Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Leave Kirkman’s Camp via charter flight to Johannesburg, for a connecting flight to Victoria Falls. Your Old World hotel is a short walk from the roaring waterfall. At night, attend an exuberant display of tribal costume and dance, the African Spectacular.

VICTORIA FALLS HOTEL (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner):  View Hotel Information »
DAY 12
Victoria Falls
Tour the Falls today. As an option, take the Flight of Angels for a spectacular view. Lunch is served on the Zambezi River cruise. Like explorer David Livingstone, we presume you will marvel at Victoria Falls, which he named for the British monarch. The local Makololo tribe called the Falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders.” Vic Falls is the site of a huge cataract where the mighty Zambezi River plunges 5,500 feet down to the gorge below. The rising, cascading mist creates an almost permanent day-time rainbow. Victoria Falls is twice as wide and twice as deep as Niagara Falls. Optional activities are available, including bungee jumping (for the adventurous), elephant-back rides, river rafting and river boarding.
