DAY 2
London
Arrive in Europe early in the morning. This evening, leave on your overnight flight to Nairobi.
DAY 3
Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi, the safari capital of East Africa. Transfer to the Norfolk Hotel. This afternoon visit the Karen Blixen Museum, former home of the author of Out of Africa. Drive to Giraffe Manor for a chance to feed the 18 foot-tall giraffes. In the wild, giraffes browse on acacia trees. Acacias have long thorns that prevent most animals from eating the leaves. But the clever giraffe simply uses his 18-inch tongue to slither between the thorns. You’ll also note the dark color of the tongue which protects giraffes from sunburn.
Aberdares
After breakfast, depart for the Aberdare Mountains arriving for lunch at the beautiful Aberdare Country Club. This is the base hotel for the Ark Hotel. In the afternoon, transfer in special club vehicles to the Aberdare National Park. The Ark is a game look-out lodge, overlooking an illuminated waterhole. Aberdare National Park is home to elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and the beautiful, but elusive bongo antelope.
Aberdares – Mount Kenya
Transfer to Mount Kenya Safari Club, the quintessential luxury safari hotel. Nestled into the foothills of Mount Kenya, the Safari Club is a mecca for the international jet set, and its roster of members reads like a Who’s Who of royalty, film stars, aristocracy and the rich and famous.
Mount Kenya - Masai Mara
Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Masai Mara, flying across the Great Rift Valley. Although moderate in size, Masai Mara Game Reserve supports the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa. On the open, undulating plains, with the imposing escarpment as a backdrop, you are practically assured of sighting the Big Five -- lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
Masai Mara
Spend the day in the Mara, scene of the world’s most dramatic wildlife migration. Nearly 1.5 million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra and gazelle – all relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators -- migrate over 1,800 miles in search of rain-ripened grass. To thwart predators, wildebeest have evolved an overwhelm-the-market approach to reproduction. The unusually short calving season ensures that a great many wildebeest will survive. The lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs and leopards simply can’t eat all of the 400,000 calves that appear within a few short weeks.
Masai Mara – Nairobi - Mombasa
Transfer to the airstrip and fly to Nairobi. Experience a unique lunch at Carnivore Restaurant. After lunch, you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Mombasa for a relaxing change-of-pace at your beach hotel.
Mombasa
At leisure in your beach hotel. Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city, offers a thriving nightlife and exotic cultural traditions. Day trips to the Portuguese Fort Jesus may be arranged through the hotel or done on your own. Old Town reflects the Arab sea-trader heritage of this seaport city.
