DAY 1 & 2
USA/Canada-Cairo
Board your direct overnight flight to Cairo on Egypt Air. Upon your arrival in Cairo,
your Shades of Africa representative escorts you to the hotel.
Cairo
Travel to the best-known ancient wonders of the world, the legendary Pyramids of Egypt. Cheops’ Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the Solar Boat Museum are yours for the viewing. Lunch is at Mena House, within view of the Great Pyramid. Next, continue to Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital (2,700-2270 B.C). The enormous statue of Ramses II will amaze you. Then it’s on to the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the 13 other pyramids of Sakkara. Explore the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, where the treasures of the Pharaohs can be found. See ancient Cairo’s Roman Fortress and the Suspended Church—one of Egypt’s oldest Coptic churches. You’ll feel transported to the 12th century at the Alabaster Mosque, the medieval citadel of Salah El Din.
Cairo-Luxor
From Cairo, you fly to Luxor, and board your luxury cruise liner. Your suite affords a beautiful private view of the Nile. Lunch is on board. Head out to see the Temple of Karnak, the Temple of Luxor, the Temple of Amun-Ra and an obelisk cut from pink Aswan granite.
Nile Cruise
By ferry, cross over to Luxor's West Bank to the city of Thebes. You’ll see the gigantic twin Colossus of Momnon, the two seated sculptures made to honor Amenophis III. You will also see the Temple of Ramses III, the pharaoh’s burial place, and the Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of Egypt’s ancient monarchs. The tomb of Queen Hatshepsut is a must-see in the Valley of the Queens and Nobles. After lunch, your ship sails for Edfu.
Nile Cruise
The Temple of Horus at Edfu is known as the best-preserved temple in Egypt. After your visit, your ship makes its way to the temple of Kom Ombo and its marvelous murals. There’s a Galabeya Party tonight.
Nile Cruise
At Aswan, you’ll have the chance to see Egypt’s modern wonder, the Aswan High Dam (completed 1971). Your boat then takes you to the Temple of Philae and then off for a fascinating look at the Unfinished Obelisk where you can look in on ancient building techniques and materials. Across the Nile, visit the Botanical Island and the Mausoleum of Agha Khan. A Nubian folkloric show and dinner follows.
Aswan-Abu Simbel-Cairo
With your cruise at an end, you get back on land and head for Aswan Airport, where you fly to Abu Simbel to see its Temple and the four monumental stone figures carved to honor Ramses II. Fly to Cairo; your Shades of Africa representative will transfer you back to your hotel for a sumptuous dinner.
Cairo/Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi in the morning; your Shades of Africa representative will escort you to your hotel. Have a swim or feed the animals at Giraffe Manor. Shopping at the City Market will be a singular pleasure.
Sweetwaters
Believe it or not, there is a tame rhino here, ‘Morani.’ You may feed him by hand. Sweetwaters is a private 22,000-acre ranch populated by elephants, chimps and other animals. For your well-earned rest, there is a comfortable tent waiting. Choose from a game drive, horseback riding, evening game drive, bird walks, camel rides, or Jane Goodall’s Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Samburu
From Sweetwaters, fly to the game-rich Samburu Reserve. On safari, you will see animals only found in this part of Kenya, including Grevy's Zebra, the flightless Somali ostrich and reticulated giraffe. Samburu is a haven for bird watchers, and your verandah provides a view of crocs and hippos in the river. The arid landscape is dotted with acacia trees. As an option, visit a traditional Samburu village.
Maasai Mara
Cross the Great Rift Valley by air, arriving at Kenya's most awe-inspiring wildlife reserve, the Maasai Mara. Take a game drive in search of Africa's Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. Just as their ancestors did, Maasai herdspeople exist with their animals and traditions in perfect harmony with the environment. Take an optional, early-morning balloon flight or a side trip to Lake Victoria.
Maasai Mara-Nairobi
Return to Nairobi for shopping or the short trip to the Karen Blixen House, now a national museum (Blixen wrote Out of Africa). The hotel will host a farewell dinner in your honor.
USA/Canada
You arrive at home, rich with the visual treasures of Kenya and Egypt.
